Swedish Gate, Riga
|
To protect Old Riga from invasions, fortifications were built and gates were opened in various parts of the city. There were 8 gates in total and only one of them is still standing today.
The Swedish Gate (Zviedru Vari) on Troksnu Iela was built in 1698 by the Swedish rulers at the time.
When you go to Riga, it is customary to cross the Swedish Gateway. When you pass through, you will see The Three Brothers, the oldest buildings in Riga.
